FedRAMP Releases Updated Security Assessment Plan Templates

Posted on 20:34 by Unknown

Last week the GSA FedRAMP Program Office released the latest version of the cloud computing Security Assessment Plan (SAR) template.  This document is the most recent step toward the Federal governments goal of establishing FedRAMP initial operating Capability by June 2012.

The Federal Risk Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) is a government-wide program that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for Cloud Service Providers (CSP). Testing security controls is an integral part of the FedRAMP security authorization requirements and enables Federal Agencies to use the findings that result from the tests to make risk-based decisions. Providing a plan for security control ensures that the process runs smoothly. This document has been designed for CSP Third-Party Independent Assessors (3PAOs) to use for planning security testing of CSPs. Once filled out, this document constitutes a plan for testing. Actual findings from the tests are to be recorded in FedRAMP security test procedure workbooks and a Security Assessment Report (SAR).

This release also includes templates for:
  • Information Technology Contingency Plan
  • Control Implementation Summary (CIS)
  • eAuthentication
  • Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M)
  • Rules of Behavior
  • Privacy Threshold Analysis and Privacy Impact Assessment
  • Security Assessment Plan; and
  • FedRAMP System Security Plan

Expanding Maneuver Warfare in IT

Posted on 06:15 by Unknown
Earlier this week I published "Cloud Computing: The Dawn of Maneuver Warfare in IT Security" via Ulitzer. In publishing the article my intent was to explore the more dynamic approach to information security offered by cloud computing. Although the conversation continues in earnest, today I would like to highlight Ben's thoughts from Iron Fog:

"What about managing virus outbreaks, patch deployment and vulnerability detection?

managing virus outbreaks - If I can scale my security infrastructure rapidly, I can scan my distributed filesystem and workstations, I can hunt down and remove infections - in theory I can scale my cloud rapidly enough to combat warhol-esque worms.

patch deployment - if I need to force patches across my environment, I can deploy a swarm of servers that will connect to every server and workstation in my enterprise and force the patch down (after I've spun up a multiple VM's to test/socialise the patch against my standard configurations).

vulnerability detection - Scanning a class B sized network can take a while, but what if I can launch a few hundred servers and ask them to scan a less than a class C each, in parallel (note: this idea wasn't mine, credit to Richard at Enomaly) - I can get near-realtime vulnerability intelligence on my environment at relatively low cost. Running a few hundred EC2 servers for less than an hour is pretty cheap, especially if compared against buying a whole bunch of expensive scanning appliances (then again, there's nessus)."

These examples are perfect extensions on the idea of maneuver warfare in information technology.  His post also brings up some concerns that need to be addressed.  Let's keep the ideas coming.

Stop the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) !!

Posted on 06:52 by Unknown
Dan Morrill! Count me in !!

In his excellent article, "Cloud Computing is Scary - But the FUD Has to Stop",  Dan makes some excellent points:

  • It is time to start embracing where business is going, and trying to make sure that they are doing it in the safest way possible.
  • What security professionals need to be doing rather than creating their own FUD is work out ways to make it safer.
  • While we might struggle with new technology, it is time for information security folks to step up to the plate and get smart on how the technology works, what the risks are, and how those risks can be reasonably addressed by good security solutions.
  • There are some great resources for good information, Cloud Ave is one of them, but trend micro, IBM, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle and others who have all figured out that this can be a very neat technology and help companies expand and contract according to business need and market conditions.

EMC Studies Cloud Computing Security

Posted on 12:17 by Unknown
Storage firm EMC has joined the Daoli Trusted Infrastructure Project which conducts research into "trust and assurance" in cloud computing environments.

The team's research will focus on cloud computing, trusted computing and virtualisation.

EMC is also working with China's Tsinghua University on the research of cloud computing technologies, a hot sector which is raising attention from both manufacturers and research institutions around the world.
